Chucho Valdes

The pianist, composer, arranger and band leader, born in 1918 in the western Cuban town of Quivican, was the father of another leading Latin jazz artist, Chucho Valdes.

The pianist and composer/arranger was a prime mover in the international musical exchange that was Havana in the middle of the 20th Century. Late in his career, he enjoyed a new wave of fame as his accomplishments came to light anew. The father of Chucho Valdés, he was 94.

MADRID — Renowned Cuban pianist Bebo Valdes, a composer and bandleader who recorded with Nat "King" Cole, was musical director at Havana's legendary Tropicana Club and a key participant in the golden age of Cuban music, has died in Sweden at age 94.

The news of his death was confirmed by Cindy Byram, the agent of Valdes' son Chucho Valdes, who is a well-known musician in his own right. A cause of death was not given.

A program in Carnegie Hall’s Voices From Latin America series on Tuesday night featured four jazz pianists, Chucho Valdés, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Danilo Pérez and Egberto Gismonti.
