For the 2009 PDN PhotoPlus Expo held in October at New York's Jacob Javits Center, WST talks about the impact of technology in general, what it means if you were not at the expo, and subsequent implications for organizations, including those in the steelpan art form. When Steel Talks (WST) checked out printers at the second of the three-day PhotoPlus Expo 2009 held at Jacob Javits center in New York. WST provided digital prints featuring a young Pan woman and 'Pink Devils' - both captured in action at New York's J'Ouvert celebration less than two months ago - for companies to reproduce in hard copy prints. The auditions are out of the way and preliminaries for the Talent Expression competition is about to start. Pan sticks-wielding 'Bandoleros' invaded Brooklyn on the night of September 5, 2009 and captured the New York Steelband music Panorama Championship title - Sonatas Steel Orchestra-style. After the dust had settled among the ten dueling orchestras - and with the maximum complement of one hundred musicians on stage, Crown Heights-based Sonatas remained standing, becoming the 2009 Panorama champs. It was pan yard recording night, this time for the mighty Sonatas. Always up for the challenge and looking to be innovative and new, Sonatas again surprised all present. It is hard to imagine if celebrated musicians Bach and/or Beethoven were alive today, that they would not both be New York Panorama music arrangers/composers. Panorama is the most significant New York performing arts medium in the last 50 years bar none. On paper it is a ten-minute musical performance calling for the execution of a series of dexterous and imaginative innovations that demonstrate top musicianship. When Steel Talks (WST) tagged along with Basement Recordings as they began their annual calendar of panyard recording sessions and productions. First stop was Despers USA Steel Orchestra located on Classon Avenue, in Brooklyn, New York, who were the first to be captured last evening at their Pan Loft, performing Tunapuna Scanty’s 'Bandoleros.' Despers USA joins the Basement Recordings line-up to be featured on the organization's Pan in New York series of Pan-4-Life CD productions. Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer and the Cabinet of Antigua and Barbuda congratulated 19 year old Steelpan Arranger Khan Cordice on becoming the recipient of the Government's Cultural Scholarship to pursue degree studies at the University of the West Indies in Trinidad. The two-month trip to Canada by Siparia Deltones - Panorama 2007 Small conventional orchestra winner - has been made possible by the Trinidad and Tobago Entertainment Company, as the organization aims to facilitate international exposure of local entertainers. One of the greatest and most fertile grounds for the arts, literature and entertainment is that celebrated place in uptown New York known as 'Harlem.' Its musical and artistic legacy is unparalleled. Today was the 35th anniversary of Harlem Day, and the steelpan instrument through CASYM Steel Orchestra was part of that commemoration of this rich cultural history and tapestry. This was the final leg of the great pan weekend - Sonatas' launch at D'Radoes Panyard. With two other highly successful legs (Despers USA and Pantonic) to the three-day band launch-fest already in the bag, Sonatas was left to write the final chapter on this weekend.
