Longtime friend and sextet singer Cheo Feliciano says Cuba died Sunday at Mount Sinai Medical Center from complications of a bacterial infection he had fought for several years.
The band leader and conga player was born Gilberto Calderon in 1931 in New York; his family is from Puerto Rico. His group and its signature vibraphone-fronted sound started causing a stir in the salsa world in the 1960s.
