Black Bird in Give It To Dem

This song combines hip hop with the mbira, a traditional Shona instrument played in Zimbabwe. The mbira was played by the humble yet talented. The used recording engineer was Alka Nemo and final mixing was done by the infamous On Point.

Masalala: Learn Your Culture (While You Can)

My grandfather was over 100 years old when he died and he knew so much about my country and family's history but I never got that knowlege from him because I looked down on my culture and my history, I was too absorbed in American culture. Now that he is gone I realize how much knowlege is gone with him. I should have learned from him. Learn your culture and your history while you can. Zim youth, we need to stop trying to adopt other people's cultures and love and learn our own.

Colonization: The Demonizing of a Musical Instrument

When the British colonisers came to Zimbabwe they brought Christianity with them and taught my people that "the bible is right and all your native culture is wrong." The beautiful and spritual musical instrument known as the mbira -the instrument that calls the spirits- which had been an integral and highly respected part of our culture, traditions and religion was demonised and to this day, the Shona people of Zimbabwe regard it, not as a thing of beauty, but as something vile and demonic.

Zimbabwe: Who is this Robert "Bob" Mugabe?

Robert Mugabe is the Idi Amin of our time. Once he is gone and Zimbabwe starts healing, his only legacy will be to have given new definition to the stereotype of a banana republic dictator...
