This solitary spotted Hyena was desperate to approach a nearby carcass, but knew that there was a pride of lions sleeping out of sight in the bushes about 15 feet away. In the end, the Hyena just didn’t feel safe enough and left with an empty stomach.

There are less than 2000 lions left in the whole of Kenya, and if nothing is done they will all be gone by 2019! We were fortunate to see 4 individuals in Amboseli.

Sunrise in Ponta do Ouro / Mozambique.

Original picture done with a Nikon F80 and a slide film. I've played with my new digital slide duplicator. The results are obviously not as good as a slide projection. But it works ;)

Amboseli is a land of contrasts. It has very low rainfall and so is generally dry and brown, except for areas of swamp (fed by snow melt run-off from Mt. Kilimanjaro).
