Antoine and His Family
Antoine was our CRS guide in Burkina Faso during our visit. He is fluent in French, English, and his tribe's language. A reserved yet warm man, he took great care of us during our trip.
Center for Girls, Kaya, Burkina Faso
During our time in Kaya, we visited a center that provided support and housing for girls who were fleeing arranged marriages. Most of them were fleeing situations where their families had promised them to much older men who already had another wife (or were widowers). Here they received schooling and job training in the hopes that they could move on and support themselves. Run by the Order of the Immaculate Conception
Villa Wende Food Aid
Make no mistake. Every food item that CRS sends from the U.S. is marked with this message. Numerous sights such as these during our trip made me proud to be a U.S. citizen. I think this does a lot more to win hearts and minds than anything else.
Pougdiari Women, Burkina Faso
During our welcome to Pougdiari, many women danced for us, proclaiming joy at our arrival with the traditional African ululating (think ay-ay-ay while hitting the roof of your mouth with your tongue). The one time in my life I really felt like a celebrity!
Manni Microfinance Group, Burkina Faso
We visited the village of Manni, where women were organized into groups to receive microfinance loans to earn income for their families. Through innovative ideas and hard work, these women earned cash to send their children to school and provide for their families. Often, development programs target women as they are the primary caregivers in families and the men are unfortanately not as responsible.
The Bishop of Kaya, Burkina Faso
Our visit with the Bishop of Kaya, who served us a couple of wonderful meals. He had done amazing work with CRS, from promoting HIV-AIDS programs, to increasing girls education, to building a new technical college. I believe he had studied and worked in Michigan for a couple of years.
Pougdiari Drummers, Burkina Faso
Part of our welcome was traditional singing and drumming.
Villa Wende Center, Burkina Faso
We visited a center for women accused of witchcraft, which received food aid from CRS. We took a picture with the staff instead of with the women of the center, as we wanted to respect the privacy of these women, who had been cast out from their villages and forced to find refuge here.
Pougdiari, Burkina Faso
During our time in Pougdiari, we each visited a family homestead of a student. Here I am with my customary gift to guests, with that's right, a live chicken. Its hard to describe the feelings you have when people living in extremely poor conditions proudly give you one of their few chickens as is custom in many parts of Africa. I could not refuse a gift I felt I did not deserve, but we were able to give them to our drivers, who took them home to their families.
Crossing A River, Burkina Faso
When we travelled to Kaya in northern Burkina Faso, we had to cross several rivers. We were lucky in that we could drive through this. Most people have to wade or bike accross.
HIV-AIDS lesson, Kaya, Burkina Faso
We attended a primary school lesson in Kaya on HIV-AIDS(supported by the Chuch and CRS). These grade 3-4 students put on a drama(skit) on what they had learned about proper relationships. I would have understood more if I had known French but I got the general idea.
Donkey Cart, Burkina Faso
A normal mode of transport in rural Burkina Faso. CRS sponsors a program that helps farmers and small business owners buy donkey carts in order to bring their good to market. Part of a microfinance strategy.
