Tombouctou and surrounding villages, Mali, (25 October 2017) - People living in the Tombouctou area are amongst the most vulnerable in Mali. Insecurity and rampant desertification are putting the lives of hundreds of thousands at threat. An all-time-high malnutrtion rate of 15% has been recorded in the latest SMART survey. Food insecurity has also increased in recent months. Despite insecurity, humanitarian actors are providing support to the most vulnerable. However, a lot more is needed. The Humanitarian Response Plan is significantly underfunded, with only 36% funding at the end of October 2017.

Education at threat in Mali

Korioume, Tombouctou, Mali (25 October 2017) - Girl running in a small community school in Korioume. This school, like many others in the area, lacks basic equipement. There are not enough benches for all and children do not have notepads and pens. Parts of the school have been attacked. The village used to be a stronghold for the Djihadist group that occupied the area in 2013. More than 500 schools are closed in Mali as of beginning of the 2017-2018 school year. The number of closed schools has increased by two-thirds in a year (300 schools closed in June 2016). About 150,000 children are out-of-school today in Mali.

Women groups near Tombouctou equipped to cultivate their future (FAO, CERF)

Korioume, Tombouctou, Mali (25 October 2017) - Women groups from communities in Korioume, 15 km away from Tombouctou, receive tools to help them start cultivating their land again. With the Humanitarian Response Plan significantly underfunded, only the most vulnerable groups have received aid so far. More is needed with thousands in the region relying on seasonal agriculture near the Niger river to survive. Food insecurity has increased significantly in Mali over the past months. One person out of five is food insecure in Mali today.
