Nigeria: cholera outbreak follows displacement caused by Boko Haram

The outbreak in Nigeria started in Borno state’s capital Maiduguri, which has experienced the biggest influx of internally displaced people, with over a million displaced living in the city. It spread quickly and by late October there were over 5 000 suspected cases and over 60 dead, mostly in settlements hosting internally displaced populations.

Cholera is a highly contagious disease caused by a bacterium called vibrio cholerae which infects people when they drink or have contact with contaminated water or dirty hands. The incubation time is very short, from a few hours to five days, and the disease can kill adults and children in just a few hours through extreme dehydration of the body caused by violent episodes of watery diarrhoea and vomiting. This is why a rapid response is essential.

Part of the emergency response to prevent cholera from spreading involves the disinfection of the contaminated areas in and around affected household’s shelter. As the disease is still contagious even after an affected person’s death, funerals are secured to avoid further contamination. This mean that bodies need to be disinfected. The job is done by Solidarités International’s highly committed water, sanitation and hygiene teams on the ground.

In urban areas where the concentration of population is higher, a cholera outbreak can have disastrous consequences. To mitigate the outbreak, people disinfect hands and feet when entering and leaving refugee camps. Solidarités International has also distributed 4000 household kits containing soap and water purification tablets. Hand washing stations are also being installed in places such as schools and markets.

Lack of hygiene has been identified as one of the reasons for the quick spread of the cholera outbreak in north east Nigeria. It's for that very reason why Solidarités’ teams ensure access to safe water and proper hygiene products such as soap.
