United Kingdom - The Champions of Steel competition took place in London’s famed Hyde Park this past Saturday, August 23. Ebony Steel Orchestra, the 2007 panorama champions, retained their title for 2008. (panonthenet.com)

Taiwan - Mat Britain, Director of the Vanderbilt University Steel Band Program in Nashville Tennessee, recently returned from teaching steel pan at the Taipei International Percussion Summer Camp (TIPSC) held at the Taipei National University School of the Arts in Taiwan. The ten day percussion intensive camp has grown over the past nine years to include 200+ students ranging from 10 to 21 years of age. Multiculturalism and diversity are the themes of TIPSC with classes in marimba, vibraphone improvisation, marching percussion, drum set, three forms of traditional Chinese percussion, and steel band. New York, USA - "DOUGLA," that's the name of one of the tracks on his upcoming eight-track compact disc which would be in honour of his son, Jaden who was born on January 22nd, 2008 - surely he looks like a "true Trini." New York, USA - This past Sunday Pantonic Steel Orchestra held their 2008 launch at their Brooklyn summer practice facilities. Pantonic's panyard was filled with steelpan music fans as they traveled from throughout the New York tri-state area to get their heavy dose of Sunday evening pan music. It was labeled the 11th Anniversary Family Day Celebration and featured performances by Crossfire, CASYM, D'Radoes, Harmony and Pantonic Steel Orchestras, In addition to the many steelpan music enthusiasts, (and more importantly) - members of every steel orchestra in New York had some type of representation. Lagos, Nigeria - In a celebration that lasted four hours at the palace of the Alagbara of Agbara, Agbara town in Ogun State, south west Nigeria, two chieftaincy titles were conferred upon panman Bowie Sonnie Bowei, and one upon his wife, Ndudi Bowei. The couple was honored in tradition fashion and in recognition for their ongoing and integral roles in the development of the steelband artform in Nigeria overall, especially within the community where Panland, the parent organization is set up. I'm mulling over events that spanned 24 years since an opportune visit to the Los Angeles home of Rudolph Charles – The Hammer himself, the headstrong leader of Desperadoes on Laventille hill. He migrated there to be with family, but the development of pan had always been his fire. The Carnival over, he’d be in chilly LA engaging himself in various aspects of the art – tuning, inventing, metallurgy (the technique of working with metals) and forming relationships with drum factories. New York - Once again the Pathmark Multicultural Arts Festival facilitated the opportunity for thousands of people to experience a significant part of Caribbean culture. United Kingdom - CSI and it does not relate to the well known Crime Scene Investigators television series. It however refers to the Caribbean Steel International steel band originally formed in 2004 with three members, Brent Holder, Michael 'Chato' Toussaint and Jason Constantine. After obtaining invaluable experience from working with some of the top steel bands in the UK, Trinidad and Japan, they made a conscientious decision to form a gigging band to fulfill the growing demand for 3 or 4 piece steel bands. Herkimer, N.Y. -- The Herkimer Elementary Steel Drum Band will be able to get some new equipment. State Senator James Seward announced Monday the band will receive a $10,000 senate grant for new steel drums. (panonthenet.com)

Washington D.C: - When Steel Talks took off down the I95 highway on a very special assignment. Today we would get to see, meet and hear the performance of a group of talented young people from the Navajo Nation - who among other things have incorporated the steelpan instrument as a major part of their repertoire. Panama - A performance at the Caribbean Shop in St. James, last April culminated in one of Icewater Pan Ensemble’s most memorable series of performances to date. His Excellency Prof. Gerardo Maloney, Ambassador to Panama, was present at dinner that night, to hear Icewater dish out samplings of their sumptuous repertoire. Prof. Maloney summarily introduced himself to the band, and the rest is history. The history of an invitation to Panama as guests of the Consejo Nacional De La Etnia Negra, to perform at the 3rd Annual Afro Panamanian Festival. (panonthenet.com)

Canada - The Steel Pan Academy of Greater Sudbury will hold its grand opening Saturday at 2 p. m. at the corner of Kathleen Street and Simon Lake Road in Naughton. Maryland - It only gets better with time. And after ten years, it was replete with steelband music presentations ripe for enjoying.
