Sentinel-2A satellite to transfer data via laser

Sentinel-2A, the first optical imaging satellite in Europe's Copernicus environmental surveillance programme, was launched from Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana on 23 June. The data from the Sentinel satellites is sent to a relay satellite with a laser beam and then, from there, sent to the ground station.

Certainly one of the most ambitious solar system exploratory spacecraft missions ever devised has been the Rosetta mission developed and launched by the European Space Agency , and sent towards the comet known as Churyumov-Gerasimenko , which was discovered by two Russian astronomers in 1969 and which has an orbital period of 6.4 years.

CAYENNE: Some 27 kilogrammes of cocaine have been discovered in the suitcase of a French military officer as he tried to board a plane in French Guyana, the local prosecutor's office said. The drugs were found during a customs check Friday at Felix Eboue de Matoury airport near Cayenne, the capital of the French overseas department on the northeast coast of South Ameri.

A new study from the University of Exeter has revealed that the Central African country of Gabon is providing an invaluable nesting ground for a vulnerable species of sea turtle considered a regional conservation priority. A huge ground survey covering nearly 600 km of Gabon's coastline has uncovered the largest breeding colony of olive ridley turtles in the Atlantic.

A military communications satellite for Italy and France has been launched into geostationary orbit by the Space Alliance of Thales Alenia Space and Telespazio. Finmeccanica, which created the alliance with Thales, said SICRAL 2 was sent aloft aboard an Arianespace launch vehicle from Kouou, French Guiana, last Sunday and will have a service life of more than 15 years.
