Youth-oriented gubernatorial debate deemed a success - Caribbean Business Online - 09/10/08

Candidates for governor answered questions from young voters; debate moderated by reggaeton star Daddy Yankee

In a multimedia debate moderated by Puerto Rican reggaeton artist Daddy Yankee, the four candidates for governor answered questions from young voters that at times were more surprising than the candidates' answers.

The questions were varied, ranging from topics such as education, crime, the environment, economy and corruption, the latter one being of particular interest on current campaigns due to the 24 federal accusations against governor and reelection candidate Aníbal Acevedo Vilá.

Daddy Yankee asked all four candidates to urgently address the crime and drug problem in the public residences and barrios of the island. "My challenge is for anyone who wins to commit to create a committee that would urgently address this situation. Let's bring some hope back," he said.

Yankee also took advantage of the opportunity to ask all candidates who had their sons and daughters in the public education system, or whether any of them were a product of public education. Only two of the candidates, Edwin Irizarry Mora of the Puerto Rico Independent Party (PIP) and Rogelio Figueroa of the Puerto Ricans for Puerto Rico party (PPR) raised their hands in affirmation.

Daddy Yankee's big reggaetón smash "Gasolina" is not exactly about off-shore oil drilling.

PHOENIX - Maybe someone should tell Senator John McCain that Daddy Yankee's big reggaetón smash from a few years back, "Gasolina," is not exactly about off-shore oil drilling.

The two men appeared here at Central High School this morning, where Mr. McCain was endorsed by Mr., er, Yankee. The presumptive Republican nominee was upstaged by the reggaetón sensation, who received squeals, and then, when Mr. McCain guided him over to some of the teenage girls gathered in the library, hugs and kisses.

Daddy Yankee, a native of Puerto Rico, become a crossover hit a few years ago when his song "Gasolina" brought reggaetón , a Spanish-language spinoff of dance-hall reggae, to a wide audience. Although its catchy refrain, "Dame mas gasoline,'' or give me more gasoline, fits in nicely with Mr. McCain's "drill here, drill now" message these days, it is usually understood as a double entendre that has little to do with fossil fuels.

Afterwards, Mr. McCain took Daddy Yankee on his plane, which is headed to Sacramento. He said that he had met Mr. McCain when they both named to Time's 100 most influential list a couple of years ago. Asked on the plane what "Gasolina" is about, he smiled and said, "Energy independence."

Reggaeton star Daddy Yankee tells 'Barrio' story - Reuters/Yahoo News - 17/08/08

The recording studio of Daddy Yankee is in a modest house that looks just like any other in Carolina, a town on the outskirts of San Juan, Puerto Rico, that is home to the reggaeton movement. Inside, it's a different story.

There's an expensive, design-conscious look to the floors, walls and the glass-enclosed booth equipped with the latest sound technology. Construction materials are scattered around the building as the renovation continues, but reggaeton star Yankee (whose real name is Ramon Ayala) has recently wrapped another major project: the feature film "Talento de Barrio."

"Barrio," which he produced and stars in and which tells a story of the Puerto Rican barrio, had its premiere in July at the New York Latino Film Festival and is slated for release in theaters in September. The soundtrack, which includes Yankee's hit single "Pose," was released August 12 on Machete Records.

Q: What can your fans expect to hear on the "Talento de Barrio" soundtrack?"

Daddy Yankee: This album reflects my personal taste. I don't limit myself as an artist, and I have no musical limits whatsoever. I explore every kind of music. There are artists who remain faithful to one sound. Not me. In essence, this is a musical trip through reggaeton, hip-hop, vallenato, merengue, rock, soca, bachata and bounce, combined with the electro pop and dance on "Pose." All of the songs are new, and I think that they will be equally well received by purists and the most cutting-edge fans.
