Dramouss, published in 1966 by Plon, is the third novel of Camara Laye. The work breaks a twelve-year silence and constitutes a radical rupture with his first two books.
The narrator, Fatoman, returns to Guinea after six years in Paris and discovers a homeland corrupted by the violence of dictatorial regimes. The book is a fierce indictment against the regime of Sékou Touré, who appears under the guise of « Le Big Brute ». It is Laye’s least nostalgic book, the most bitter, and perhaps also his most necessary.
The work presents itself as a prophetic political fable, in contrast to the dream of Africa that Laye would later publish in English under the title A Dream of Africa.
