The Other Side of the Sun

The Other Side of the Sun is the second novel by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, published in 2006. It is a historical novel that retraces the Biafran War (1967–1970) in Nigeria through the lives of three main characters.

The story alternates between the perspectives of Olanna, a young woman from an affluent family; her half-brother Uggah; and Bill, a British student who falls in love with Kainene, Olanna’s younger sister. Through their intertwined destinies, Adichie paints a portrait that is both intimate and epic of a nation torn apart by secession, famine, and violence.

The novel won the Orange Prize for British and Irish writers in 2007. It is often compared to the works of Chinua Achebe for its narrative strength and its treatment of postcolonial issues.
