Purple Hibiscus

Purple Hibiscus is the first novel by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, published in 2003 (in English) and in French the following year. The story is set in Nigeria shortly after the 1966 coup d’état and follows Kambili, a Nigerian teenager raised in a wealthy family deeply rooted in Catholicism.

Her father, Ezekiel, is a powerful and seemingly charitable businessman, but he is also a violent despot who imposes crushing religious strictness upon his family. The novel explores the devastating effects of domestic tyranny, spiritual colonization, and the weight of silence on children.

The title refers to a unique purple hibiscus that grows in the family’s garden—a symbol of unusual freedom and beauty within an oppressive universe. The work won the Orange Prize for British and Irish writers in 2005.
