Freedom
Freedom is the major series of essays by Léopold Sédar Senghor, published in five volumes by Seuil between 1964 and 1992. Speeches, lectures, and theoretical texts therein trace thirty years of thought: négritude as the humanism of the 20th century, the African path to socialism, and dialogue between cultures.
- Freedom I — Négritude and Humanism (1964): the theoretical foundation. « Négritude is the totality of the cultural values of Black Africa. »
- Freedom II — Nation and the African Path to Socialism (1971): the political project of independent Senegal.
- Freedom III — Négritude and the Universal Civilization (1977): the key concept of « cultural mixing » and giving.
- Freedom IV — Socialism and Planning (1983): the economy and the State in debate.
- Freedom V — Dialogue of Cultures (1992): the intellectual testament of the poet-president.
The whole forms the architecture of an idea: no culture is solitary; the « universal civilization » will be born from the mixing of all inheritances.
