De purs hommes
A viral video: in Dakar, a crowd digs up a corpse to throw it out of a cemetery sullied by “shame.” Around this homophobic news event, a 37-year-old French teacher, caught in the family turmoil and the memory of a buried love, confronts the lies men tell themselves. Drawing on a real event that occurred in Thiès in 2016, De purs hommes dissects homophobia in Senegal and the fabrication of “purity” masculinity. Translated into English under the title Pure Men (Other Press, 2026), the novel has been selected for the National Book Award for Translated Literature.
