By the Sea (2001) is the sixth novel by Abdulrazak Gurnah. Saleh Omar, sixty-five years old, arrives in London in 1994 with a fake passport under the name Mahmud. He flees the Zanzibar Revolution and seeks political asylum. His past catches up with him when he discovers that the real Mahmud lives in the same city. The novel was shortlisted for the Booker Prize and the Los Angeles Times Book Prize.
