Desertion (2005) is the sixth novel by Abdulrazak Gurnah. The plot is set in a small coastal town in Tanzania in 1899, around Hassanali and the dramas that affect his family. The book explores the themes of colonialism, identity, and the consequences of the Arab slave trade in East Africa. Translated into French under the title Adieu Zanzibar by Sylvette Gleize.
