Description

Foundational poem in poetic prose by Aimé Césaire, written at 19 and published in the journal Volontés in 1939 before its first edition in Havana (Spanish translation by Lydia Cabrera, preface by Benjamin Péret, and illustrations by Wifredo Lam) in 1943. The text becomes a major reference of the Négritude movement, exploring colonial uprooting and black identity affirmation. The Cahier alternates lyrical chants, invocations, and calls to revolt, forging a poetic language that will mark an entire generation of Caribbean and African writers.
