Description
Play by Aimé Césaire published in 1966 by Seuil in Paris. Adapted from the book by Léopold Sédar Senghor, the play retraces the brief and tragic journey of Patrice Lumumba, a major figure in Congolese independence and Prime Minister of the Congo (1960). Césaire denounces the assassination of Lumumba, colonialist conspiracies, and the betrayal of anticolonial ideals. The play serves as both a commemorative monument and a political weapon, in the image of Césaire’s theatre, which always combines aestheticism and commitment.
