Description
Play by Aimé Césaire, published in 1969 by Seuil in Paris. A free adaptation of The Tempest by William Shakespeare “for a black theatre”, as indicated by the subtitle. Césaire transposes Shakespeare’s play into a Caribbean colonial context: Caliban becomes a colonized being who revolts against his oppressor (Prosper), while Ariel embodies the slave seeking freedom. The play is a political act against colonialism and for the liberation of oppressed peoples, while remaining faithful to the Shakespearean work it reinvents.
