La Danse sacrale (La consagración de la primavera, 1978)

La Danse sacrale (La consagración de la primavera) is one of the last novels by Alejo Carpentier, published in 1978. The plot is set in Paris in 1754 and recounts the story of the « Bal des Ardents » — a famous carnival organized by Charles VI of France where gentlemen, disguised as dancing wild men, triggered a fire that caused several deaths.

Through this historical event, Carpentier explores the theme of dance as a primordial force — a life instinct that defies death. The novel is divided into several sections that link the Bal des Ardents to modern history: the creation of the Russian ballet by Diaghilev, the first performances by Stravinski (Le Sacre du printemps), and dance as the ultimate expression of human liberation.

La Danse sacrale is often interpreted as a meditation on the fragility of civilization, its ability to give birth to aesthetic marvels while being threatened by its own collective excesses. The novel has been criticized for its sometimes overly dense prose, but remains one of Carpentier’s richest texts on baroque aesthetics.
