Description
Novel by Maryse Condé published in 1997. The story follows the return to Desirada, an imaginary Caribbean island, of Iphigénie, a woman who lived in France for a long time and whose youth was marked by an unrequited love for her twin sister’s lover. Condé recounts the buried mysteries of the island — family secrets, silent violence, and tensions between local communities — through the perspective of her narrator returned to her homeland. The novel explores themes of belonging, the foreign gaze on one’s origins, and forbidden stories.
