Description
First novel by Maryse Condé, published in 1976. The story takes place in an imaginary African village and follows the downfall of a young urban man corrupted by the values of money and power. Hérémakhonon, the village’s old spiritual chief, predicts the destruction of his community by these new values. The novel is a virulent critique of neo-colonialism and African elites who would sacrifice traditions for an alienating modernity. The work already establishes the themes that run through all of Condé’s literature: betrayal, identity, and spiritual quest.
