Description
Major novel cycle by Maryse Condé, published in two volumes: Les Murailles de terre (1984) and La Terre en miettes (1985). The work retraces the history of the Ségou kingdom (present-day Mali) from the mid-18th century to the early 19th, following the rise and decline of the Bambara Empire. Condé alternates characters and eras to tell the rise of an African state, its internal struggles, and its confrontation with external powers. The novel is considered a major work of Francophone African literature, remarkable for its historical documentation and epic ambition.
