Description
Autobiographical account by Patrick Chamoiseau, published in 1996. The author retraces his childhood in Martinique, between the 1950s and 1960s, within a colonial society in full transformation. The book is an exploration of emerging Creole identity, through the prism of personal memory. Chamoiseau describes daily life, the daily struggles of Black Martinicans, and the emergence of a Creole culture built between African, French, and Caribbean influences. The work is an important milestone for understanding the genesis of Creole thought, to which Chamoiseau would later dedicate essays.
