Description

First novel by Patrick Chamoiseau, published in 1988. The work tells the life and death of Solibo Magnifique, a popular Martinican storyteller whose oral performances constituted a living tradition of Creole culture. After his death, his loved ones attempt to restore the “sound” of his voice through fragmented narratives that overlap, contradict, and complement each other. The novel is a tribute to Creole orality and a reflection on the loss of communal speech in the face of colonial writing. The work officially launched the Créolité movement alongside Édouard Glissant and Raphaël Confiant.
