Origins and first steps: from Inhaca Island to television
Rogério Dinis grew up on Inhaca Island, off the coast of Maputo, raised by his grandparents after his mother left for Portugal in 19693. At twelve, he returned to the Mozambican capital to continue his studies. A stay in Portuguese soil, three years later, nurtured another passion: television. Back in Maputo, he joined TVM as the host of the “Espaço Aberto” program alongside João Ribeiro. In the 1980s, he was the first to introduce kwassa kwassa and American rap there.
Musical revelation
Music caught up with him in the 1990s, when producer Zema placed his trust in this young man with a bold vision. Influenced by Michael Jackson and Tupac Shakur, Rogério decided to adopt the stage name MC Roger in a well-thought-out marketing strategy. His first album, Moçambique Minha Paixão (1997), sold ten thousand copies and earned a silver record. The follow-up did not disappoint: two albums created in collaboration with producer Mr. Arssen brought three gold records. When the latter chose a solo career, an act MC Roger welcomed with goodwill, the singer confirmed his solo abilities with “Tu és Bela”3.
International revelation and consecration
The peak arrived in 2007 with “Patrão é Patrão”, a track that became the biggest commercial success of his career4. Since then, MC Roger has never stopped touring: a dozen albums, nearly thirty music videos, tours in Africa, Europe and Portugal.
Ambassador and legacy
Beyond music, MC Roger established himself as a cultural bridge-builder. From 2008, he hosted the show “Músiques d’África” on RTP África with Vanessa Figueiredo. In 2014, the Mozambican government named him cultural ambassador5. He was the first musician to receive this distinction.
Today, MC Roger continues to represent Mozambican music6.

Between television, music and heritage commitment, his career remains a model of versatility and artistic loyalty.
