Biography

MC Solaar: the rap poet who made Hexagone dance

In 1991, while French rap barely existed, Claude M’Barali, alias MC Solaar, propelled “Bouge de là” to fifth place in the Top 50. Born in Dakar to Chadian parents and raised in the Parisian suburbs, he became one of France’s best rappers. Twenty-six years later, Géopoétique won album of the year at the Victoires de la Musique, confirming that a poetic phrasing can survive trends.

The journey of a rap poet

Claude M’Barali was born in Senegal, in a family from Chad. The troubles in Chad forced his parents into exile when he was only six months old; the family settled in Saint-Denis and then Villeneuve-Saint-Georges. His father returned to Chad, leaving his mother, a nurse, to raise Claude and his three brothers and sisters alone. At twelve years old, nine months in Cairo “opened his mind.” Back in France, he obtained his high school diploma in 1988, studied languages and philosophy at Jussieu, joined Posse 501, and began tagging as “Solaar.”

In the summer of 1990, with Jimmy Jay, he recorded “Bouge de là” (Cymande sample), which reached fifth place in the Top 50 in 1991. Qui sème le vent récolte le tempo followed, certified platinum. In February 1994, Prose Combat sold nearly one million copies, a classic of French rap, a synthesis between social commitment and urban poetry. The video for “Nouveau Western” was filmed in Texas, New York, and Paris; Victoires de la Musique 1995 for best artist and best video.

From the 1990s, he collaborated with Guru (Gang Starr) on “Le bien, le mal” (Jazzmatazz Vol. 1, 1993), Ophélie Winter on “Un jour” (Le Bossu de Notre-Dame, 1996), and Missy Elliott on “All n My Grill” (1999). A member of the Enfoirés since 1997, he rejected hardcore rap and claimed Gainsbourg as an influence. After a five-year lawsuit against Polydor — Prose Combat disappeared from shelves — he published Cinquième As (2001), Mach 6 (2003) and Chapitre 7 (2007), recorded in New York. Return in 2017 with Géopoétique (album of the year at Victoires 2018), then Triptyque in three parts in 2024.

Legacy

MC Solaar established French rap on the international stage. His poetic phrasing, love of wordplay, and literary culture make him a major reference in French song, at the crossroads of jazz-rap, urban poetry, and African music. The Académie française awarded him the Grand Medal of French Song, a rare distinction for a rapper. More than three decades after “Bouge de là”, Solaar continues to publish, carrying forward the legacy of a Parisian suburb he immortalized.
