Al-jeel (La Jeunesse)
L’al-jeel (the term designating “Youth” in Arabic) is a broad term for modern North African pop music, influenced by Western styles. This current encompasses Algerian rai, Egyptian pop music and urban tunes productions from the Maghreb.
Al-jeel emerges in the 1990s with artists like Cheb Mami (Algeria, rai), Saad Lamjarred (Morocco), El Général (Tunisia, Algerian hip-hop) and the wave of North African rap. The style blends Western pop, rap, rai and traditional Arab sounds with a modern urban aesthetic.
