Arabo-andalou
Arabo-Andalusian music (or andalouî) is a classical musical style originating from Al-Andalus, preserved and developed within the Muslim communities of North Africa (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, and Mauritania). It combines Arabo-Andalusian music with local Berber and sub-Saharan musical traditions.
The system of noubas (musical suites) is the fundamental structure of this repertoire, performed with string instruments (rebab, udi), percussion, and voices. The style is highly structured and complex, featuring numerous rhythmic subdivisions (taqât).
Arabo-Andalusian musicians and orchestras are central figures in Maghrebian classical music. Names such as Abdelwahab Dabbagh (Syria), Hassan Benjelloun (Morocco), and the masters of Constantine (Algeria) perpetuate this tradition.
