Hip-life (Ghana)
Hip-life is a Ghanaian music style born in the 1990s, a fusion of American hip-hop and Ghanaian highlife. Hip-life combines rap flows with catchy highlife rhythms and lyrics in Twi, Ewe, and English.
Pioneers include Reggie Rockstone (the “father of hip-life”), Ofori Amponsah, and later Jmelzy, Sarkodie (one of the most-listened-to Ghanaian rappers), Shatta Wale, and artists like King Akan and Nasty C (South Africa, hip-hop).
Hip-life is one of the most popular genres in Ghana and influences the West African music scene.
