Jit (South Africa)
The jit is a South African music style originating from Zulu and Swazi townships. It is an upbeat, fast-tempo dance music played with electric guitars, brass instruments, and percussion. The jit is an ancestor of afro-jive and kwaito, influencing modern township music.
Pioneers of the jit include Johannesburg orchestras from the 1950s-60s, and the style evolved into afro-jive in the 1980s.
