Maskanda (South Africa)
Maskanda is a South African musical style stemming from rural Zulu traditions, played on finger-picked acoustic guitar. The term means “food for the soul” in Zulu. It is a narrative music, often sung in Zulu or local languages.
Pioneers include Joseph Shabalala (who also practiced isicathamiya), and the numerous maskanda artists who perpetuate this rural tradition in South Africa.
