Aya de Yopougon

The series Aya de Yopougon, scripted by Marguerite Abouet and illustrated by Clément Oubrerie, is set in the Yopougon district of Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, at the end of the 1970s. It follows the daily lives of three teenage girls — Aya, Bintou, and Adjoua — through friendships, first love, school, and family life.

The first album won an award at the Angoulême Festival 2006 (first album prize), and the series achieved major commercial success with over 350,000 albums sold and was translated into about twenty languages. The seventh volume was released on September 14, 2022, and the eighth on November 15, 2023.

The work also received a cinematic adaptation as the feature-length animated film Aya de Yopougon (2013), co-produced by Marguerite Abouet and Clément Oubrerie.
