The Most Secret Memory of Men

In 2018, in Paris, the young Senegalese writer Diégane Latyr Faye discovered The Labyrinth of the Inhuman, a novel published in 1938 by T.C. Elimane, a « black Rimbaud » whose trace was lost after a plagiarism scandal. His quest for the missing author — from Senegal to Argentina via Paris — becomes a vertiginous meditation on writing, colonization, and the face-to-face encounter between Africa and the West.

Inspired by the real-life destiny of the Malian writer Yambo Ouologuem, Renaudot Prize winner in 1972, the novel received the Goncourt Prize 2021 — first sub-Saharan African laureate since the creation of the prize in 1867 — and sold more than 370,000 copies. It has been translated into fifty languages: English (The Most Secret Memory of Men, Other Press, 2024; longlist for the National Book Award for Translated Literature), Spanish (Anagrama, 2022), Brazilian Portuguese (Fósforo, 2023), German — Die geheimste Erinnerung der Menschen, Hanser, Haus der Kulturen der Welt International Prize 2023 —, Dutch (Atlas Contact) and Catalan (Més llibres).
