Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o’s first novel, Weep Not, Child (1964), follows the story of Njoroge, a young Kikuyu aspiring priest swept up in the Mau Mau rebellion. Written in 1962 at Makerere, the novel opens with tensions between colonizers and indigenous populations in pre-independence Kenya.
