Biography
Admiral T
Christy Campbell, alias Admiral T, turned his island into a musical springboard. The first solo Caribbean artist to perform at the AccorHotels Arena in Paris in 2017, this son of ten children born in 1981 in Les Abymes spent his career weaving together reggae dancehall, gwoka and zouk — as he told RFI, where Guadeloupe, Jamaica and Haiti cross paths in a borderless musical crossroads.

Musical career
Christy Campbell grew up in Les Abymes, where Jamaican dancehall and zouk intermingle with traditional rhythms. From age 12, he participated in the Karukéra Sound System, a collective of DJs that resonates bass and rhythms through the streets of Pointe-à-Pitre. “I have always been immersed in traditional music and African music,” he will explain. The collective releases 1848 in 1998. Rapide, recorded at age 16, and collaborations with Féfé Typical or Saël make the local scene drool. The single “Gwadada” (2000) propels Admiral T to the forefront.
In 2003, he leaves KSS and releases Mozaïk Kréyòl on Don’s Music. The album celebrates Creole culture — “Rèv an mwen”, “Sound-System”, “Sucre d’orge” — and becomes a cult phenomenon. Its reissue by Universal Music Group in autumn 2004, enriched with collaborations with Wyclef Jean, Rohff or Pearl, makes it a national success. The album sells over 50,000 copies and earns a silver disc. Admiral T tours at the Olympia, shares Bercy with Grand Méchant Zouk, and multiplies festivals.
Toucher l’horizon (May 2006) enters the top 10 in sales with duets featuring Diam’s, Kassav’, TOK and Rohff. On October 23, 2006, he wins the Césaire de la musique. Skyrock Music Awards, Virgin Music Award 2008, Hit Lokal Awards accumulate. He launches his WOK LINE label, tours Africa and performs in Jean-Claude Barny’s Nèg Maron. In 2009, he supports the Guadeloupean general strike with “Pété chenn la” (a title meaning “break the chains” in Creole), a hymn of Caribbean social struggles.
Instinct Admiral (April 2010) confirms his stature: 11 features including Patrick Saint-Éloi, La Fouine, Busy Signal and Médine. Face B (2012) strikes even harder with “Gangsta”, a denunciation of juvenile violence. In 2014, I Am Christy Campbell operates a radical shift toward traditional gwoka: he revisits “Zombi maré mwen” by the legendary Chaben, and explores the ka, that barrel that transmitted to the Neg Marrons their strength of claim. On April 14, 2017, he becomes the second solo Caribbean artist to perform at the AccorHotels Arena after Kery James. Totem accompanies this historic performance. His subsequent albums — Mozaïka, Caribbean Monster (2019), 40 Degrés (2021), Maestro (2025) — confirm an artist never short on inventiveness.

Legacy
Admiral T paved the way for an entire generation of artists from French Antilles — Krys, Saïk — who align themselves with the dancehall-Creole lineage. He proved that one can cultivate a specifically Guadeloupean sound and reach major Parisian stages without renouncing his roots. His legacy is twofold: musical, with this kako style blending rhythmic bases of the ka and dancehall, and militant, with songs calling for identity pride and resilience. In 2025, with Maestro produced by his own son, the family flame continues to shine.
