Career: from Zouti to the Zénith

Eddy Miath was born in the French Antilles, where music is a family language. In 1987, he joined the group Zouti, a formation founded by his sister Tatiana Miath, then a teenager1. This album inaugurates a blazing career for Tatiana: in 1988, she releases her first solo album under the Debs Music label, and establishes herself as early as 1990 at the concert Le Grand Méchant Zouk at the Zénith in Paris, alongside Kassav’. Eddy composes and writes on this album, laying the foundations of his apprenticeship.

His versatility is quickly confirmed: singer, guitarist, programmer, he masters all the gears of production. Bilingual in English and Spanish, with some knowledge of German, he will then be able to tour well beyond the Antilles.

1989 sees the birth of Eddy’s first solo album, A pa jé non, driven by the title Sunshine. But it is in 1990 that the name is inscribed in the canon of zouk: he co-wrote La Pli for Zépiante, a song that will become a standard of the genre2.

The hits follow one after another. Zoukland (1994) opens him up to the island of Réunion. Fair Play (June 1997) consolidates his reputation. Leitmotiv (1998) propels Eddy’s zouk beyond the Antilles: his covers of Nikita (Elton John) and Red Red Wine (UB40) explode sales in France, Africa, and Réunion1. Intemporel (2000) follows with the hits Trop fragile and Careless Whisper.

The duo Tombé damou (1992) with Claudia Saint-Amand wins the best duo award. On ti béko (1996) reunites Eddy with the Lozahic brothers and Jacob Desvarieux of Kassav’ on guitar3.

After Mots pour maux (2001), dedicated to the Indian Ocean, and À nos femmes (2002), intended for the Réunion market, Eddy Miath focuses on tours. In 2014, he releases Authentique zouk under his label Up and Go, with Frédérick Caracas. The album features Péyé cash and Vini pou nou palé, a return to roots praised by fans. In 2016, he receives the Gold Tubes award1.

Today, he directs the concept Otantik Zouk Live, whose first leg took place at the legendary New Morning in June 2025.
