Origins and revelation

Highlife, this genre born in Ghana in the 1920s, blends Akan traditional rhythms and Western influences2.

Ofori Amponsah grew up in Akan culture, immersed in the Twi language3.

He left school when a Rastafarian named Marcus taught him the basics of music4.

His meeting with Daddy Lumba opened the door to the industry5.

His first solo album, Asew, was released in 2001 and established the foundations of his style: a voice between alto and tenor, impeccable Twi lyrics, and an unusual R&B sensibility for highlife6.

The triumph of Otoolege and the return to secular music

Otoolege, released in 2005 with producer Appietus, became an immediate hit7.

The following year, he won seven awards at the VGMA, including Artist of the Year and Song of the Year8.

His fame earned him an invitation to perform for President John Kufuor, which he did not honor, causing a scandal for which he publicly apologized9.

He toured London, New York, Chicago, and Sierra Leone10.

In 2013, at the height of his career, he left secular music and published The Gospel According to Ofori, even presenting himself as a pastor11.

Five years later, he returned to highlife with Alewa in collaboration with Sarkodie12.

“If I hadn’t made that decision, I wouldn’t be alive today,” he admitted in 202613.

He asked his fans for forgiveness for the surprise and announced that he would one day write a book to tell everything14.

Legacy

Ofori Amponsah is one of the most nominated Ghanaian artists in history (seventeen VGMA)15.

He trained and financed Kofi B, Barosky, and Kofi Nti16.

“I would not invest in the same way anymore,” he acknowledged in 202617.

His last album, Million Dollar (2020), features collaborations with Flowking Stone and Kwabena Kwabena, proving he remains relevant twenty years after his debut18.
