Roots and revelation

Thomas Tafirenyika Mapfumo was born in 1945 in Marondera. Until the age of ten, he lived on the farm with his grandparents, immersed in Shona culture. It was there that he heard the mbira for the first time — this instrument of metal laminae over a gourd that accompanies ancestral ceremonies. This sound would shape all his music.

Settled in the Mbare township in Harare, he listened to Otis Redding, Elvis Presley, and the Beatles. At sixteen, he sang in the Cyclones, then joined various formations, including chicken farming — hence the name of the Hallelujah Chicken Run Band (1972). The revolution occurred when Mapfumo and his guitarists transposed mbira melodies onto the electric guitar, while choosing to sing in Shona — a cultural and political gesture in a Rhodesia that marginalized African cultures.

Chimurenga as a weapon

The Acid Band was born in 1976. The album Hokoyo ! (« Attention! »), released in 1977, triggered an alert among colonial authorities. State radio banned it, but clubs and radios in neighboring countries broadcast it. The police arrested him and detained him for three months without charges — public protests forced them to let go.

In 1978, Mapfumo gave the Blacks Unlimited what he baptized chimurenga — a Shona term meaning struggle or war of liberation. This word evokes both the 1896 uprising against colonization and the ongoing guerrilla war. With his guitars imitating the mbira, his choirs, and his texts in Shona, music became the soundtrack of resistance.

Independence arrived in 1980. Mapfumo performed on the same stage as Bob Marley. But soon, joy cracked.

From triumph to exile

From the late 1980s onward, Mapfumo denounced corruption and the excesses of the Mugabe regime. Corruption (1989), inspired by the Willowgate scandal (ministers diverting vehicles), caused a storm. The government harassed him, inventing accusations. In 2000, he fled to Oregon.

In exile, he continued: Rise Up (2005, Real World Records) was also banned. Carnegie Hall, NPR, international festivals — he carried the Zimbabwean voice everywhere. In 2018, with Mugabe’s fall opening the way, he returned to Harare for the « Homecoming Bira », then embarked on a series of national concerts before returning to the United States. In August 2025, at age 80, he announced his retirement.

Major works

Work Year Why it is essential
Hokoyo ! 1978 First act of chimurenga: mbira and rock fuse, speech becomes a weapon
Corruption 1989 Program album denouncing the Willowgate scandal; courage in music
Rise Up 2005 Re-rooting in exile; published by Real World Records, the message reached the world

Legacy and influence

Thomas Mapfumo introduced the mbira into the arena of modern pop. By transposing his spiritual scales onto the electric guitar, he shaped an instantly recognizable sound, influencing generations of Zimbabwean musicians, from the Bhundu Boys to contemporary artists in Harare.

His posture as a musician-citizen — refusing to stay silent before power — makes him a flagship figure of African musical activism. The 2018 return proved that chimurenga crosses generations: young Zimbabweans danced to tracks composed more than forty years ago. More than 50 years after his debut, the lion retires, but his voice continues to resonate.
