The name 'Ferro Gaita; comes from the combination of two instruments, the Ferro (piece of iron played with a knife) and the Gaita (Kind of Accordian) used to play Funanå, a traditional style of Cape Verdean music

The style has its roots in the 19th centrury with the arrival of the Accordion in Cape Verde, brought by Portuguese priests for the church. The instrument was re-appropriated by the Black and Mulatto slaves and used to sing songs expressing their struggle and problems. The style was eventually forbidden in public places until Cape Verdean independence in 1975.

Ferro Gaita was formed in 1996 by 3 young musicians who went on to record a debut 'Fundu Baxu'. Since then the band has released 2 more albums and with each influenced Cape Verdean music significantly.

May 9th is sure to be a night to remember. Make sure to get your tickets early.
