In 2016, a producer from Soshanguve, a suburb of Pretoria, added a few notes to a Drake track that would become the most-streamed song in Spotify’s history. From township to global turntables

Themba Sekowe grew up in Soshanguve in a family where music flowed freely: his mother sang gospel, and his uncle studied piano. The word “Maphorisa” means “the police” in tsonga — a nickname he adopted on the decks. He trained himself in computer-assisted production, then joined the Uhuru group in 2008, where he refined his beat-making sense and built a reputation as a versatile producer.

The 2016 turning point changed everything. In California, Wizkid sent Maphorisa a sketch of a track; he adjusted it, slowed the tempo, and added African production elements. The result, “One Dance,” exploded in more than fifteen countries, was certified diamond in the United States, and became the most-streamed song in Spotify’s history. Maphorisa returned to the experience with humility: “I added a few things. 40 and Nineteen85 are the main producers,” he told Sowetan Live.

In 2019, he formed the Scorpion Kings with Kabza De Small, a young talent he spotted by asking Soweto DJs who was “heating up” the streets. Their first self-titled album Scorpion Kings and The Return of the Scorpion Kings propelled amapiano — a style born in Gauteng townships, a blend of deep house, jazz, and log drum rhythms — to the forefront. “I knew it would be something big,” he confessed to OkayAfrica, recalling that Wizkid himself had suggested investing in this sound.

From there, Maphorisa took amapiano to global stages. In 2021, he opened Wizkid’s Made in Lagos Tour. In April 2023, “Mnike” topped South African charts. The Soundcity MVP Awards in Lagos crowned him African DJ of the Year. Three SAMAs, including Album of the Year, also honored the Scorpion Kings.

Legacy and influence

DJ Maphorisa is a genre architect. By blending Nigerian afrobeats and South African house, he paved the way for a generation of borderless producers. The Scorpion Kings gave amapiano its first popular structure — pianistic melodies, log drum, soul vocals — and artists like Focalistic, Ami Faku, and Samthing Soweto built upon this foundation. Every club on the continent that vibrates to amapiano bears Maphorisa’s imprint.
