From the Darkuman quartet to the world stage

Born Julius Kojo Antwi on November 24, 19592, the future maestro grew up in Darkuman, a popular neighborhood of Accra, as the eldest of thirteen children. His father, Opanin Kwadwo Asiama Asubonten, was a merchant; his mother, a farmer3. The child was rocked by the hymns of the Musama Disco Christo Church, highlife rhythms from Nana Ampadu broadcast by the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, and soul music from Cow Lane market4.

After his primary studies, he joined the group Boomtalents. In 1977, he was spotted and became the singer for Classique Handles, renamed Classique Vibes in 1978. The group won the ECRAG award for Best Group of the Year in 1978. His solo career began in 1986 with All I Need Is You, a hit in Ghana4. The album blends highlife, Afro-pop, and Caribbean influences.

A composer of conscious romance

Kojo Antwi sings in Twi and English; his lyrics celebrate love and African unity. His musicians worked alongside Hugh Masekela and Miriam Makeba. He defended the rights of aging musicians during his tenure leading GHAMRO5.

Legacy

Kojo Antwi remains a central figure in Ghanaian music. Nominated for the first BET Awards in 2010, he received the Kora Award twice (2000, 2003), a Millennium Excellence Award (2021), and the Keys to the City of Worcester (2023)6. In April 2023, he explained: “I don’t make music to win awards. If God gives me a new song, I will share it with the world”7. In February 2026, he published his memoir, Mr. Music Man: The Journey, recounting nearly five decades of career8.
