Biography

Omah Lay: Melancholy and melodies across the ocean

On December 14, 2020, Omah Lay and singer Tems were arrested after a concert in Kampala for violating lockdown protocols. The young Nigerian artist, already on the rise, experienced this episode as a shock. He would transform it into raw musical material. Three years and two albums later, he is no longer the one asking if he has a place—he built it, note by note.

From Port Harcourt to the international stage

Stanley Omah Didia was born on May 19, 1997, in the Niger Delta, in Port Harcourt. His childhood unfolded in a working-class neighborhood where growing up was a matter of survival. Music awaited him there: his grandfather played drums for highlife singer Celestine Ukwu in the 1970s, and his father also practiced percussion. These roots forged his artistic identity.

After high school, Omah Lay rapped in a group under the stage name « Lil Street King », then switched to production. He composed instrumentals for other Nigerian artists—a silent work that led him to a realization: « I wanted to hear things others didn’t give me. » In April 2019, he released his first two solo singles, « Do Not Disturb » and « Hello Brother ». The sound was fresh: soft melodies crossed with a clean production, a style the press dubbed afro-fusion—a term designating artists who blend Afrobeats, R&B and pop with Nigerian sounds. That same year, he signed with KeyQaad and left Port Harcourt for Lagos.

In May 2020, his first EP Get Layd exploded. The five tracks reached the top 15 on Apple Music Nigeria. He released a second EP, What Have We Done, in September, which included the hits « Godly » and « My Bebe ». In July 2021, he participated in the remix of Justin Bieber’s « Peaches », then collaborated with the same singer on « Attention », the central track of his first album, Boy Alone, released in July 2022. Acclaimed by critics for its emotional intensity, the album debuted at #1 in Nigeria. A deluxe edition with the « Soso » remix featuring Ozuna arrived in summer 2023, and that same year Omah Lay won the Headies for Best Male Artist and Album of the Year. In November 2025, his song « With You » alongside Davido earned him a GRAMMY Award 2026 nomination—Best African Music Performance. In 2025, he released Clarity of Mind, exploring electronic territories. In a statement from his label Warner Records, he defined himself thus: « I now know what my peace is. »

Legacy and influence

Omah Lay is part of the wave of Nigerian artists—Fireboy DML, Joeboy, WurlD, Tems—who redefined the sound of Africa at the turn of the 2020s. His clean, almost intimate production prioritizes voice over percussion. Boy Alone is cited as a reference by younger artists, and his GRAMMY nomination in 2026 validates this movement in the eyes of the Western circuit.
