From the split to Machiavellian kompa
The secret of System Band begins with a break. In 1980, Isnard Douby and Harold Joseph, former singers of the Frères Déjean, founded New System in New York. Their vision: to modernize the kompa direk invented by Nemours Jean-Baptiste with funk and soul. The result, which the group named kompa machiavel, would mark Haitian music for good.
First success: « Complainte », from Bam passe (1980), signed Douby-Harold. The following year, « Chagrin d’amour » confirmed the duo who hired Marc Chevalier as manager. « Vacances » exploded in 1983, becoming a summer anthem. « Pa Pile » from the same album introduced the Kitel maché groove (« how it works »), a revolutionary guitar sound. Bassist Ernst Vincent « Tines » introduced slapping and triplets that transformed kompa.
The major creative turning point came in 1988 with composer Michel-Ange Bazile. The lyrics became more engaged. « Move Souvni » (1989), inspired by the death of keyboardist Baptiste Édouard, shook fans; « Fierté nationale » (1991) was composed for the first truly democratic elections. « Ou trompe’m » (1987) was broadcast on all radios as a cry of anger against the government; « Loulou » (1988) introduced into Creole the word designating a man abandoned by his wife; « Cesar » (1990) gave birth to a synonym for money. Each member contributed to the compositions: bassist Ernst Vincent, guitarist Reginald Benjamin, percussionist Michel Blaise. System Band released « Goudou Goudou » after the 2010 earthquake.
Legacy and influence
System Band transformed kompa into a genre pantheon. Their style — groovy strings, saturated choruses, slapping bass lines — inspired Djakout, Nu Look, Zenglen, Hangout; all, according to critics, are « reinterpreters » of the System sound. « If you love konpa, you must love System Band », wrote journalist Garry Pierre-Pierre.
Isnard Douby left behind about thirty slogans that became popular proverbs. His death in 2021, seven days before his 72nd birthday, after complications linked to COVID-19, prompted an official tribute from the Haitian Ministry of Culture. The group continues its touring under the label System Band #1, and the Haitian public does not tire of praising the maestro’s classics.
