Batuque (Cape Verde)
Batuque is a musical style and traditional dance from Cape Verde, originating on the island of Santiago. Played with percussion instruments only (gong drums, baleboma and stringed rebeco), it accompanies couple dances at a slow but rhythmic tempo. Batuque is often practiced by women during ceremonies and local festivals.
Batuque is frequently paired with cola and morna, forming the three fundamental styles of Cape Verdean traditional music. Modern artists like Bana and funaná groups incorporate batuque elements into their compositions.
