Bend-skin
Bend-skin is a Nigerian musical style that influenced juju and afrobeat. The term comes from a traditional Yoruba dance where dancers perform a knee-bending movement (« bent skin »). The style is characterized by fast guitar rhythms, singing in Yoruba, and traditional percussion.
Pioneers include Lagos groups from the 1950s-60s, and this style prefigured the development of King Sunny Adé’s juju.
