Bongo flava (Bonga Flava)
The bongo flava is the popular music style of Tanzania, born in the 1990s in Dar es Salaam. The term comes from Swahili bongo (brain/intelligence) and English -flava. It is a fusion of hip-hop, R&B, reggae dancehall, and local African rhythms, with lyrics in Swahili, English, and sometimes local languages.
The pioneers include DJ Shau, Harmonize (the most famous in the genre), Nadia Mukami, Diamond Platnumz, and older groups like Wanachi and Ras Kimbo. Bongo flava is today a major cultural phenomenon in East Africa and influences the Tanzanian diaspora.
