Luanda
Luanda is the most famous short story collection by José Luandino Vieira, published in 1963 and banned by the Portuguese censors until 1972. The three stories (« Estória da galinha e do ovo », « Estória do pescador Domingo », « Estória da lesma e de sua filha ») are set in the musseques (slum areas) of Luanda. The language is one of the book’s strengths: a “Bantuized” Portuguese, mixed with Kimbundu, which has marked the history of Angolan literature. The work won in 1965 the Grand Prix de Novelística from the Sociedade Portuguesa de Escritores — an award that led to the occupation of the society’s headquarters by political police (PIDE). Marcelo Caetano then refused to register the work for the competition.
